ESCO

Maritime’s role in the regeneration of Europe’s largest science park also led to an astute investment in an energy services company (ESCO).

Our asset management team took on the day-to-day running of Discovery Park in Kent for a two-year period, creating a strategic masterplan for its ongoing development.

The 220-acre site has 1.5 million sq ft of buildings, warehouses, laboratories and office space, all of which need heating and power.

Situated next to Discovery Park is a biomass heat and power generation plant run by Kent Renewable Energy Limited, which utilises locally sourced wood and forestry products to generate sustainable heat and energy.

Recognising an opportunity, Maritime curated an ESCO, taking a 20% stake in the business that distributes Kent Renewable Energy’s heat and power to the businesses across Discovery Park.

All surplus energy is then sold to the electricity grid under a long-term contract with Engie to power homes across the region.

In 2023 the plant generated 210.8 GWh of energy, equivalent to supplying power to 50,000 homes and saving around 45,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Maritime Capital is committed to investing sustainably, as well as diversifying our portfolio when worthwhile opportunities like the ESCO arise.
